The Weather Company has released an updated version of its Storm Radar app, introducing new radar capabilities, redesigned mapping and an AI-powered weather assistant.

The updated app integrates high-resolution radar with customizable data layers, enabling users to track weather conditions including temperature, wind, lightning and tropical systems. A new “high-res single site radar” feature provides more detailed insights into storm rotation, hail and severe weather.

James Belanger, vice president of meteorology at The Weather Company, said, “Storm Radar’s latest update is a gamechanger for anyone interested in the weather, from the casual observer to the seasoned storm chaser.

“With more than 100 meteorologists on staff, creating a compelling, best-in-class radar experience has been a shared passion and true labor of love for our scientists and product experts. We’ve leveraged generative AI and high-resolution radar to empower every user to understand and respond to weather like never before.”

The app’s new AI-powered Weather Assistant is designed to translate complex meteorological data into personalized updates based on user location and preferences. It can provide guidance on daily planning, such as timing outdoor activities, as well as explanations of weather systems and potential impacts.

According to the company, the assistant uses generative AI to deliver tailored insights in real time, with options for different voice interfaces.

Additional features include real-time alerts for severe weather events, drawing on data from the US National Weather Service and NOAA, as well as enhanced visualization through updated radar and mapping layers.

Brennan Gerster, chief business officer and general manager of consumer at The Weather Company, said, “Storm Radar is like an always-on meteorologist in your pocket, raising the bar for on-the-go radar tracking. After rigorous internal and user testing, I knew we had something special once our target audience said they’d choose Storm Radar for their weather tracking needs.”

The app also introduces a redesigned interface with customizable widgets and improved navigation, enabling users to tailor how weather information is displayed.

Storm Radar is currently available on iOS, with subscription options for premium features. The company says an Android version will follow.
