The Council of the European Meteorological Society has elected its German representative, Jörg Steinwagner, as its new vice president for a three-year term, starting on September 8, 2025.
Steinwagner will follow outgoing VP Dominique Marbouty of the French Meteorological Society Météo et Climat, who held the role since spring 2020. Marbouty was EMS president from 2011 to 2014 and recently steered the Strategy Monitoring Group. His impact on the EMS and its development “will be lasting”, the EMS said. Marbouty added that it had been a pleasure to contribute to EMS, and “emphasized the importance of being part of this pan-European project as a European citizen, helping to develop a Europe-wide citizenship understanding”, according to EMS.
Steinwagner has doctorate in meteorology and more than 20 years of experience at the intersection of atmospheric science, remote sensing and technical system development. His professional background spans leading roles in ESA, DLR, and EUMETSAT projects, and he has worked extensively in both scientific institutions and the private sector.
