Weathernews Inc. has signed a memorandum of understanding with the National Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting (NCHMF) and the Hydrometeorological Survey, Technology and Services Center (HMSTS) of the Vietnam National Meteorological and Hydrological Administration (VNMHA) to provide AI-based forecast information for typhoons and heavy rainfall.

The partnership will build on Weathernews Inc’s international cooperative relationship with the Vietnam Department of Meteorology and Hydrology which began in 2015, and will use the highly accurate, high-resolution weather forecasting that the company has developed over many years.

The partners will also use Google’s flood forecasting and cyclone prediction models to help reduce the risk of natural disasters and strengthen resilience in Vietnam.

“It’s encouraging to see Google’s AI models for flood forecasting and cyclone prediction being used in Vietnam,” commented Yossi Matias, vice president and general manager, Google Research.

“We believe that AI models, along with strong partnerships with governments and expert agencies like WNI, are key to building toward climate resilience, improving disaster preparedness and making communities safer.”

Weathernews Inc said it will “continue to actively promote collaboration with organizations and companies around the world that face similar challenges and require cooperation, and by implementing our company’s prediction technology and cutting-edge AI technology in society, we will reduce the risk of natural disasters and strengthen resilience.”
